MEMORIAL STONE

The memorial sign was designed by the architect Anatoly Chernov.  The stone work were coordinated by the sculptor Vladimir Dem'anenko.

The monument immortalizes the names of 13 residents of the Krasnogvardeisky district of the city of St. Petersburg, who died in military conflicts.

I was honored with the work of designing and manufacturing the metal part of the memorial. After the approval of the sketch, I had a few days left to complete the work, so the installation was carried out on the evening before the opening.

The composition depicts a thick sheet of armor torn by an explosion. Not having heavy equipment to fabricate parts from a 3 inch thick sheet, I decided to fabricate this sheet from a relatively thin steel sheet by welding, followed by hot deformation and shaping. Thus, a fairly light and reliable design was obtained.

The opening of the monument was timed to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan.
