A private residence in San Francisco features a custom staircase created through traditional blacksmithing techniques rooted in centuries-old European metalwork. Rather than reproducing the appearance of historic ironwork with modern fabrication methods, the railing was made as a true hand-forged composition. Steel was heated, shaped, curved, and fitted by hand, giving each element the subtle variations and character

The staircase had a particular design challenge: there was the transition where the open staircase meets a solid wall. The railing and handrail had to change direction while remaining a single, flowing composition. Rather than treating the railing as an addition to the architecture, the metalwork was designed as an integral part of it, carefully following the movement and proportions of the staircase.

The result combines traditional craftsmanship with contemporary architecture. Hammered surfaces, hand-shaped curves, and forged connections give the railing a sense of permanence and individuality.

Traditional craftsmanship does not have to belong to the past. It can become part of contemporary architecture—one forged element at a time.
